Faith: noun. 1. belief that is not based on proof 2. confidence in a person or thing 3. the loyalty or fidelity to a person, engagement, promise, etc.
Trust: noun. 1. reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, etc. of a person or thing 2. confident expectation of something, hope. 3. the obligation or responsibility imposed on a person in whom confidence or authority is placed
Do they differ? By definition they are quite similar. I see faith as a gut wrenching feeling, a devotion, the strength and power of a belief. Where as trust is something that has to be earned, can be given or taken and is easily broken, sometimes beyond repair. But are either anything more than mere hope? A hope that someone won’t break your heart, the hope that there is someone watching over you, hope that one day everything will be all right? Answering my own question, no - trust and faith cannot exist without each other. How can you believe in something that you can’t trust? And how can you put trust in something when you have no faith? It is seemingly a paradoxical situation. It's also unfair to immediately expect both notions from others. However, trust and faith can be learned, given and shared. Like everything else, it just takes time.
I’ve always had the faith in you. Now I’m just working on the trust.
